Not Just For The Big Guyz

Many people associate Human Resources departments with larger corporations, working in tandem with the corporation’s legal team, and doing whatever it takes to protect the corporate entity. Though these views of HR have relevance, Human Resources should more accurately be seen as a business partner who helps drive success through strategic planning, process improvement, workplace compliance, employee-focused initiatives, and other aspects of your organization. With the effective execution of these business systems, your organization will become more competitive in your field, attracting high-quality employees and more clients. Your business will also have higher employee fulfillment, leading to increased retention. We will talk about employee retention and what goes into an employee feeling fulfilled where they work in a later post.

Here are a few comments I have heard through the years:

I am a small business with only a few employees; do I really need HR help?

YES!

I am a new business owner with no employees yet; do I really need HR help?

If you plan on taking on employees at some point in the near future, the answer is…

YES!

Well, my team has been operational for several years and operates like a well-oiled machine with no interpersonal issues. Seems like we are above the need for HR. Don’t you think?

NO!

I strongly disagree. Though HR is seen as a go-to in conflict management, that role is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to what a good HR contact can do for the inner workings of your business. Proactivity is one of the best countermeasures to problems arising within your organization.

Realizing the value of what HR practices and individuals bring to your organization is a crucial step to growth and can even be a determining factor in the success or failure of your business (Bevilacqua, 2024). That’s what building a Capital Culture is all about.
